tcu is the transmission control unit, im not sure of any way to test other than unplug it and drive without it and if the problem keeps up then its not the problem, but keep in mind that when driving with it unplugged you have to shift thru the gears manually, but im guessing its the iac or like previously stated the tps may be adjustable, best bet would be break out the haynes manual and read up on those two items and read thru the trouble shooting area too

Im not entirely sure how the jeep tps goes in, but on hondas, the sensor is spring loaded inside. You have turn it a quarter turn, hold it that way, then put it in the housing held in that manor. If you dont do it that way, the voltage reading is incorrect and it wont work right.

You still may want to check the voltage at the tps connector. Make sure you're reading 5 there and then (depending on whether yours is a m/t or a/t) you should see what its reading at wot. For the 88s, it should read 4.6-4.7 at wot m/t, and for the a/t it should read .2 at wot.

wide open throttle
All measurements should be made with engine OFF. All you need is power on to do this quick check. Also, you may need the spear type meter leads in order to get a reading through the back of the connector.
EDITED:
ALSO please keep in mind that those numbers are for an 88. It may be different numbers for a 98.
