Default Heater core replacement

I need to replace the heater core in my 98 cherokee and I know this is a very involved job.I was wondering if any one on here has done it.How long does it take.I'm a heavy truck mechanic so I can do it,but I dont know if I want to..lol.Also has anyone ever taken theirs to a shop to have it done..If so,how long did it take them and about how much did it cost?I found the heater core online..its a Spectra 93024 for $65..their are others but some are $130..is it worth the extra money?

Are you sure it needs replacing? Sometimes the hose fittings at the firewall leak and allow coolant into the cockpit. Some times a CLR cleaning will fix poor heat (see the second link above). Replacing the heater core is something I hope to never need to do!

I had a guy that owns a shop do mine and it was 650.00 to do and that included parts and while he was in there he replaced the a/c condenser, both were leaking and he said the condenser in these things have tendency to leak.

Does one REALLY have to discharge the A/C in order to replace the Heater Core? Why?

On my 1990 it would stink and fog up the windshield. That powdered stuff like alumaseal took care of it....years ago I don't trust the "chunky stile", like bars-leak.
