idk about a 97 but my 96 was pretty easy. jus undo ur blower inside the engine bay. take out like 3 bolts on the firewall from the engine bay. take the center console out. undo ur hose to the heater core and then the black box under the dash slides out and u can replace it. this is wat i followed

Disconnect the two lines for the heater core at the motor. Blow out any excess fluid. While keeping the houses higher than the motor pour in some CLR. Keep the houses elevated (use the windshield wiper to hold them up) and let the solution sit for about 30 minutes. Flush out the heater core thoroughly. Then top off the cooling system after you reconnect the hoses. You'll probably have to top off the cooling system after you've ran the motor a couple times. I suggest keeping a bottle of coolant in the jeep.

Go to www.ericthecarguy.com and search for his video on clearing a clogged heater core. He does what I described above but you'll get a better idea if you actually see what's happening.

For a properly diagnosed clogged heater core (be SURE about this), I first try backflushing the heater core both ways with garden hose pressure.
If that isn't successful, I always try the CLR method. I have had success 3 times personally with this method.
What have you got to lose? If the CLR method doesn't work, you have to tear the damn vehicle apart to put a heater core in, so it is always worth a try...........and if it doesn't work, clear your schedule for a solid day to replace the heater core.
Direct link.

I back flushed mine a few months ago but didn't have any CLR on hand...i thought I did. But the heart has been working cuz before I flushed the heater core I had zero heat. I plan on doing the CLR flush soon though.

I cannot tell you how many people have been helped and have been successful with the CLR flush method.
CLR really seems to work well on the calcified crap in the heater core...........

Yeahhhh I still need to soak mine in CLR but haven't had a chance. With winter almost over in southern cali there is almost no point.....but then again I don't want to have to bother with it next year during winter
