Switching it to "vent" and turning the temp control to hot and it works fine. I just thought that if you switch it to "heat" it would come out from the front vents. There for opening and closing the heater control valve when turning it on and off. I am trying to test my HCV.
By the way thanks for letting me know its normal. I will test other stuff I have read in this thread and let you guys know what I find.

Operation is normal. Even on Heat, a little bit of air comes out the defroster vents by design. Keep operating it like you're describing if that works well for you.

Yeah, I know. But I live in Arizona. When I want AC, I want AC. Heat is the last thing I want in the cabin. I control the temp of the cabin more with fan speed.
Perhaps some clarificaton is in order on the early AC controls. I'd have to verify this, but vacuum is supplied to the HCV to close it in AC operations. But, I can't remember if it has to do with the control being on AC alone, or it has to do with the location of the Temp slider being all the way to the left in conjunction with AC being selected. . With Defrost selected, you get AC compressor operation but the HCV remains open.

Automotive HVAC systems have provided that capability (adding heat to chilled air) for the past 40+ years. In Arizona, your a/c is probably working on the ragged edge of trying to keep the inside cool 11.5 months of the year so u may never need to add a little heat to get comfortable.....kinda like the motors cooling system works on the ragged edge most of the time (in Arizona). LOL

Bigbear, glad its working for you, so now you can concentrate on other "minor" issues with the beast....
Cruiser and djb............I think Walker or one of you guys mentioned it in another thread somewhere, that even when you have heat on or defrost selected, the A/C compressor still comes on to provide either humidity reduction or to provide humidity (can't recall which) to heat the cabin/windsheild faster. for what that's worth.
I know mine works this way and has since day one when I bought it 20 yrs ago.
At least we got Bigbears' problem solved for now!
cheers

There are 5 positions on the vent selector **** that engage the compressor (yellow circles) and 2 positions that don't engage the compressor. Heat will blow out of any of the 7 selector positions IF the temp selector **** is moved off the blue (cool) and toward the red (hot). Max temp selector position is way more powerful than the a/c, therefore warm/hot air can be emitted from any vent even if the compressor is engaged and fully charged.

I will take a pic on monday of my a/c/heater controls. The way I thought it would work is if I were to put the switch to "heat" that it would still blow from the front vents in front of you and not just the feet under the dash.
Adjusting the temp from "blue" to "red" is different than switching it to "heat" and you can add heat to A/C when it is on just for clarification.
In newer vehicles you can have heat on the drivers side and and cold on the passenger side. Mine is a 1989 and the controls work for all vents unless you switch it to defrost.
Please correct me if I am wrong.
If someone can post a picture of their 89' a/c and heater controls before me that would be cool, otherwise I will post mine on monday.
I am not sure if earlier models have the same controls as mine or when they actually changed them to look like the picture Djb383 posted in this thread.

There is no "heater" per say, there are floor vents, dash vents and windshield vents......all of which are selected by the vent selector **** and all will blow heated air IF the temp selector is moved from blue to red.

Okay I snatched what I could on google, mine is simular if not the same.
Notice the "heat" option.
Dude, what part of this dont you get? You have been told multiple times.
"Heat" blows out the bottom vents by your feet.
"Vent" blows out the vents in the dash
"Defrost" Blows onto the windshield.
"Bi-lev" would blow out the bottom AND the vents.
