Default Headliner - Junkyard

Today, purchased a used headliner that is in perfect condition the only issue is that the color is tan and my interior is grey. I recently did my headliner and when the fabric was removed too much of the fiberglass came off. Can I cover over the existing fabric? Or should I remove the old fabric and recover. The new headliner is in perfect condition. Thanks.

If you are going to recover in gray, the tan has to come completely off.

You could also check at an automotive paint store and see if they have some upholstery spray paint/dye that would match your gray interior. It is called Mar-Hyde.

Any way to heat up the fabric so when the materials comes off it takes off minimal amount of the fiberglass backing?

You could try a heavy-duty heat gun/dryer like the upholstery shops use. You will burn up a home hair dryer trying to do this.

I don't think you can get it hot enough. Remember, it has to stay up there for years in summer heat in a closed up car for hours at a time.

I think you'll burn up the foam.

Removed the fabric first. Second, I then started at the back of the headliner andbegan to remove the foam from right to left. Basically, the top layer of glue was removed. Worked perfectly the integrity of the headliner is still in tack. Ready for fabric.

You know if you crack the liner, or even rip it, you can fiberglass it again with some resin and mesh. It's not hard to do and will repair it nicely.

Just go slow and set aside a whole day so that you're not in any rush to get it done.

BTW... if you have any plans of doing rear speakers... changing to LED's.. more wiring, whatever. Now is a very good time.

Good luck, and post some pics.

Tack:

An act of changing course by turning a boat’s head into and through the wind, so as to bring the wind on the opposite side. Example: "it’s a shame to see a yacht drop her sails and start the diesel just because she has to make a few short tacks"

The quality of being sticky. Example: "cooking the sugar to caramel gives tack to the texture"

A small, sharp broad-headed nail. Example: "tacks held the remaining rags of carpet to the floor"

Fasten or fix in place with tacks. Example: "he used the tool to tack down sheets of fibreboard"

intact

Not damaged or impaired in any way; complete. Example: "the church was almost in ruins but its tower remained intact"

Recently changed to all LED lights on the interior and did the 130 AMP alternator upgrade. Today, I completed the headlight harness upgrade.
