Default Headlights Don't Shut Off?

Hey guys I have another rather odd question I discovered this week about my new Cherokee. If I shut the Jeep off and take the key out THEN turn the headlights off the lights stay on unless i put the key back in and turn it to the ON position. Is that normal? I've always shut my lights off after the turning off the vehicle on previous cars i've owned. It's not an issue, just something I thought was a bit odd.

does it have the factory car alarm?

my 96 cherokee country does the same thing, but they do turn off after a minute or 2, i think it has something to do with the alarm, once you set it they should shut off, but i wouldnt know because i dont have a key fob...

try it out, they will shut off, i think the longest it should take is 2 mintues, but mine shut off after a minute

My 98 shutoff after a minute that's normal. if they don't shut off after that then you have a timer relay problem

There is a timer that will keep them on for about 60 seconds. You can jump that timer on older jeeps but I don't know on your particular year model.

okay thanks guys. I just wasn't sure there was a timer because there are no DRL's on the Jeep and no "auto headlamp" feature on the dash like my previous vehicles. Now I know I don't have to worry about them being left on by mistake if someone borrows it

it's a feature on our jeeps. it's called courtesy lamps. it's so you can see your way from the driveway to your front door while you walk up to the house.

If you leave them on they will stay on, the timer only works if you shut your car off then shut your lights off
