Unhappy Having trouble idling. Error code #22.

Ok, as of yesterday I've had a problem where my XJ has a trouble idling. Keep in mind that the day before I installed a 600w amp and a sub for my xj, it might have something to do with my problem. Yesterday I drove to my sisters softball game and parked, I had no trouble starting it, or idling at a stop. After the game I got in the jeep and tried to start it. It had a little trouble starting, but got it started. On my way home I stopped at a stop sign, put it in neutral and the RPMs dropped below 1000 and it died. Then after repeated attempts, I started it with the clutch out and got it going. I drove home and stop and started a few times with no problems.

This moring it started fine but the RPMs fell below 1000 and was about to stall but I gave it some gas and kept it alive. On my way to school the check engine light came on. I just drove it 15 miles out to my grandparents house and the whole time the check engine light was not on. It started fine and idled fine.

I checked the engine codes and got a code #22 which is a engine coolant temperature sensor above or below acceptable voltage.

I can't quite pinpoint the problem. I've checked and made sure that the amp is for sure turing off when the jeep is off.

Any help is greatly appreciated!

What year? Have you done any work to it, other then installing the amp? Has it had any of these problems before?

Follow the code. They are very accurate at pointing you in the right direction.

Replace your coolant temperature sensor.

I don't think your stereo work is related here.

It's a 93. A few weeks ago I had the CPS replaced. There's been a lot of other work but none has been to to engine.

I agree but it says it's a voltage problem which makes me think it's related to the amp.

The voltage problem is with the coolant temp circuit; OBD knows nothing about peripheral stereo systems. Don't get tunnel vision with the amp issue; sometimes things happen back to back that are "coincidental".

Coolant temp sensors are not that expensive.

ive got this same code. for autmatic its hell tho... normally im idling at 750, which is fine. but once the engine gets warm the idle jumps to 1100 and anytime u tap the gas AT ALL it revs, hangs at a higher rpm, then goes down.. i dont drive it like that lol. same code. i do know the sensor works by measuring resistance to coolant in the block, and have heard that coolant can play with it sometimes. but if you figure spending money for fresh coolant vs the probably $30 sensor and the problem IS the sensor.. ha.

oh and yes it mentions a voltage problem.. but check ur code list and most of them have voltage listed in some form. usually just means the sensor crapped out

im just gonna throw a new one in it and see whats up.

what was the verdict? my computer reads code 22 because i took AC pump off. that code will never go away.it had nothing to do with my coolant temp sensor O2 sensor or any sensor.
