funny story, I pulled up behind two ladies with a flat tyre and offered to help.. I couldnt believe it when they said "dont u think a woman can change a flat tyre?"Originally Posted by 00t444e

"no worries" I said, and stepped back a safe distance to observe for my entertainment...they did know what they were doing and got to the stage of using their footwear to try and undo the lug nuts
They were no having success, foot kept slipping off lugnut wrench..I once again politely inquired whether I could be of assistance..they assented.
I decided a show of masculine strength was in order, flexed my biceps, and undid all but one of the nuts by hand, had to get the boot into the final one
Maybe Ronda Roussey could have got them off. I dont think they even said thankyou

Not to hijack the thread, but can anyone post a video demonstrating which way to twist off a Cherokee fuel cap? I’ve been unable to find any videos and my gas gauge has been on E for two days. Please reply soon!

If you think opening a gas cap is the same as jacking up a car, you're living in a fantasy world
Ridiculous example that shows that working on an XJ is for experts and professionals only.
Every other car has dozens of jacking instruction videos and photos online.
That's b/c normal people have no idea how to d o it.
Yet, the XJ does not have a single one.

No one has tried to help me at all.
Just trolling and smug saying how easy it is.
Not one video or photo, as per the simple request, which means my point has been proven correct.
Go ahead and try to find just ONE post that tried to help and stay on topic.
Not one person got their camera and pasted a single useful thing here.
That's fine, but stop lying and acting like anyone actually contributed a single useful thing to this thread.
As for the confusion, I have never owned a car where you jack from the axle. None of my cars have an axle tube.
In fact, it seems very dangerous, since it will roll right off the flat jack plate. Also, there is no room for the jack stand on the axle.
Placing the jack stand too far on the inside also seems very unstable. Just never seen any car like this.
Every single car I own has a center front jacking area, designated by an indent or a rubber block.
Dead nuts simple, compared to this bizarro world Cherokee.

There are thousands of oil change videos online. (Just like jacking videos)
Use your brain for a second and think about why that is.

Bimmer - folks have tried to help you. One of the first responses on this thread was a picture of the underside of an XJ with the frame rails and rear axle highlighted.Originally Posted by BimmerJeeper

Most vehicles these days don't have a front axle. Late model "cherokee"s (KL models) don't even have a solid -rear- axle. I think the Wrangler is the only regular passenger vehicle still made new with a solid front axle. Even the full size trucks use some sort of fancy independent suspension systems from the looks of it. So it's not a surprise that you don't see axle tubes on other vehicles - unless it's a Jeep or an older full size truck, they're typically independent.
The reason for this is off-roading. A solid front axle is a huge advantage when off-road as compared to an independent suspension. There's only one vehicle that uses an independent suspension system and is capable off road and that's a HMMWV (aka Hummer) and they don't sell the civilian version (H1) anymore. This is achieved by a complex differential system to power the wheels without lowering the ground clearance.
The reason that there are no good videos, as has been mentioned, is that it is pretty self-evident where the frame rails and axle tube are and anywhere in that area is safe to jack from. That's not being smug, that's just what it is.
That being said - I can appreciate your concerns, so I will try to make a video just for you when I do some A/C work on my Jeep this weekend and will post it here.

The only new vehicles I am aware of that have a solid front axle are the Jeep Wrangler, Ram HD, and Ford Superduty.
