Default Harmonic balancer bolt wont screw back in

I am in the process of changing my harmonic balancer, but the bolt only gets half way in before it stops, feels like the threads inside are busted up. Any thoughts on what I have to do?

Thanks

Ps: 4.0l renix XJ

Pull the bolt and blow the hold out with compressed air? Maybe there's dirt stuck in the hole.

get another puller.. thats the only good way to get it off without messing up the crank snout or other components.

I have been searching the internet for info and came over a post regarding a seal or gasket behind the harmonic balancer. Trouble is no one had replied to it. Is there one? Does it have to be changed? There is no oil leaking on the front of the engine.

I just thought of something. I can't remember from when I did my timing cover seal a few months back, but there should be a key between the pulley and shaft. You might pull the pulley back off and make sure that the key isn't out of place and binding things up.

yeah get another puller. I just did my timing cover and seal. it tales.a long time and quite a bit of patience to get the dampener off. I also replaced the front crankshaft seal but I would not reccomend it unless your pulling your timing cover as I literally almost damaged my cover trying to pry the old one out. make sure you perfectly line the keyway on the crankshaft up with dampener upon reinstallation or you could nake it fall in!

Good point. That baby falls in, it's straight to the bottom of the front of the oil pan.

That's the front crankshaft seal (sometimes called the front main). If it ain't broke....
but you're in there...and it is a known weakness in the system (mine leaks and I've got the replacement in the garage). It comes either by itself or in the timing cover gasket set (same price for both so you might as well get the set)
