Thread revival time. It's grinding again and I'm stumped, the e fan is not installed right now, the exhaust isn't touching anything from what I can tell. I'm really stumped.
I'll check the flex plate bolts. No u-joints are bad, couple month old motor/tranny mounts.

If it only happens when you're moving, jack the rear end up and sit it on jack stands. Chock the front wheels good and put it in drive. Do a walk around and see where the noise is coming from. It would be a good idea to have a helper sitting in the driver seat to hit the brakes just in case. With the rear off the ground though it shouldn't move.

Have you checked out the condition of the brakes? could be a frozen caliper making noise, or a bent dust shield.

Well I'll try that but it only does it on take off, and only when I push the pedal pretty hard, maybe half way down. It will grind for less than 3 sec on take off, won't do it while moving, or at least I can't hear it. I noticed again because there are two uphill sections in my daily drive and I have to push the pedal pretty far down and I hear it ~50% of the time. Haven't messed with the brakes, although my e brake has been being weird lately, I'll pull up on it and there will be a hick up about 3/4 of the way up.

Did you ever find the cause? My 87 is doing the same thing.

In my case I found the noise was actually the idler pulley hitting the electric fan. My drivers side motor mount went so when the engine would torque on takeoff it would hit the fan. Cost me 2 motor mounts and a afternoon to fix. I also believe it could have been the exhaust, when I had my exhaust redone it stopped, so I can only assume that was another cause.

Also another good place to check is the body of the driveshaft itself. Is it fully greased?

Default I had a problem similar

It will do it at one red light but not the next. ??? I have already searched but haven't found my exact problem. I recently changed the transmission mount. Tcase fluid is at level. Needs changed and I will do that next weekend but it's at the correct level. This is in 2wd. Haven't tried in 4wd. Any advice would be appreciated. It only grinds on acceleration and not when moving.
It may bee your clutch fan. with mine, the clutch fan was hitting the radiator cross member. If it is that; then i would just take a pry bar to the clutch fan by resting one aide of the pry bar on the crossmember, and have the other side closer to the bottom of the clutch fan. Then just pull down until you push it away a little bit. Then just go around the clutch fan blade by blade doing the same thing.

Default Grinding sound hard acceleration.

I know this is an old thread, but I’m posting this for people searching for a solution to this problem. If it is happening after new engine or transmission mounts were installed, it’s possibly the T Case linkage being pulled when the mounts flex. New mounts will put your engine and transmission a little higher so it can pull the t case linkage a little out of adjustment. Try re adjusting your linkage.

Default At a loss

Hello, this thread is old but I'm staying optimistic. I have an 84 grand wagoneer. At first buying this jeep everything felt fine but this grind started small one day casually driving. I've noticed people say it lasted awhile with it but mine has lasted below 10 small drives and now I'm to the point that it will not engage period when in drive, 2nd or the first automatic gears. I've listened in and the grind is so loud it's hard to tell if it's from my t case or tranny. Reverse is fine but clunks when going in, neutral and park are fine.

Default Same issue

My 98 xj has the same issue I had the tranny replaced checked exhaust hanger no issues there..also My E fan has no sign of the idler pulley making contact with it. the tranny shop said they replaced my torque converter so I'm a bit stumped and it's only 2wd so I know it's not a front drive shaft.. my motor mounts are in OK shape and still have most of the rubber..is it possible it could be a wheel bearing as odd as that sounds??

I have 2014 Jeep Cherokee KL.. Trailhawk. Just had 3 inch lift installed. I have this noice seems to be coming from floor board driver side. It increase with speed as I accelerate and also when I decelerate. I'm at dealer now getting it checked out. It sounds like a diesel idling or running over the bumps on side or middle off road. I can also hear it in the back of Jeep too. Anyone find out what was the culprit?

Mine was worn motor mounts causing flex plate bolts to grind on the dust cover. Drove me crazy for weeks.
