Thread revival time. It's grinding again and I'm stumped, the e fan is not installed right now, the exhaust isn't touching anything from what I can tell. I'm really stumped.
I'll check the flex plate bolts. No u-joints are bad, couple month old motor/tranny mounts.

If it only happens when you're moving, jack the rear end up and sit it on jack stands. Chock the front wheels good and put it in drive. Do a walk around and see where the noise is coming from. It would be a good idea to have a helper sitting in the driver seat to hit the brakes just in case. With the rear off the ground though it shouldn't move.
Have you checked out the condition of the brakes? could be a frozen caliper making noise, or a bent dust shield.

In my case I found the noise was actually the idler pulley hitting the electric fan. My drivers side motor mount went so when the engine would torque on takeoff it would hit the fan. Cost me 2 motor mounts and a afternoon to fix. I also believe it could have been the exhaust, when I had my exhaust redone it stopped, so I can only assume that was another cause.
Hello, so I have been having a problem with my 98 XJ. So occasionally when I take off from a dead stop on medium to hard acceleration there is a grinding noise that sounds like it's coming from directly below me. It's a 4.0 with an AW4 and NP231 tcase. 202k miles. It does not do it on a grandma take off or if I slam the gas when already moving. It's also very inconsistent. It will do it at one red light but not the next. ??? I have already searched but haven't found my exact problem. I recently changed the transmission mount. Tcase fluid is at level. Needs changed and I will do that next weekend but it's at the correct level. This is in 2wd. Haven't tried in 4wd. Any advice would be appreciated. It only grinds on acceleration and not when moving.

I know this is an old thread, but I’m posting this for people searching for a solution to this problem. If it is happening after new engine or transmission mounts were installed, it’s possibly the T Case linkage being pulled when the mounts flex. New mounts will put your engine and transmission a little higher so it can pull the t case linkage a little out of adjustment. Try re adjusting your linkage.
Hello, this thread is old but I'm staying optimistic. I have an 84 grand wagoneer. At first buying this jeep everything felt fine but this grind started small one day casually driving. I've noticed people say it lasted awhile with it but mine has lasted below 10 small drives and now I'm to the point that it will not engage period when in drive, 2nd or the first automatic gears. I've listened in and the grind is so loud it's hard to tell if it's from my t case or tranny. Reverse is fine but clunks when going in, neutral and park are fine.

My 98 xj has the same issue I had the tranny replaced checked exhaust hanger no issues there..also My E fan has no sign of the idler pulley making contact with it. the tranny shop said they replaced my torque converter so I'm a bit stumped and it's only 2wd so I know it's not a front drive shaft.. my motor mounts are in OK shape and still have most of the rubber..is it possible it could be a wheel bearing as odd as that sounds??
