It's a 4.0 with an AW4 and NP231 tcase. 202k miles. It does not do it on a grandma take off or if I slam the gas when already moving. It's also very inconsistent. It will do it at one red light but not the next. ??? I have already searched but haven't found my exact problem. I recently changed the transmission mount. Tcase fluid is at level. Needs changed and I will do that next weekend but it's at the correct level. This is in 2wd. Haven't tried in 4wd. Any advice would be appreciated. It only grinds on acceleration and not when moving.
Is the jeep lifted or anything? Mines lifted 6.5 on 33s and here and there it will drive shaft bind in the transfer case when starting off or stopping . I need to put a slip yoke eliminator on it. I also agree with checking u joints in driveshafts. Could easily be causing that if one was bad

Yeah you were right, mine is a more muffled version of that. and you checked the driveshaft u-joints along with the axle u-joints?

The only u-joint if found with any play at all is the one connecting the transfer case to front drive shaft. And it's amount of play is tiny. Is that all it takes? I have not checked the axle u-joints however.

Exactly the problem I had. thought it was bad shocks or springs. Had to weld a new hanger on, all good now

So I got possible U-joint problems and exhaust being out of place. Anything else?

I thought I would post my findings. The problem was that my idler pulley was hitting my E fan. Every time I accelerated the engine would move and hit the fan. So now I ask is this caused by bad motor mounts?

Motor mounts are probably the cause if your engine is that far forward. When you replace them do the trans as well.

That would be my guess, but you must have "NO" rubber left in them for that.....?

Busted mounts. I did the trans a couple weeks ago. It's totally cracked completely thru. Replacing them after school tomorrow.

This could be the common "loose torque converter bolts" issue. There's 4 bolts that hold the flex plate (attached to the back of the crank) to the torque converter where the engine and trans meet. They sometimes work themselves loose and cause a clanking noise that sounds like its coming from under the floor.

There's a black lower cover/shield at the bottom of the bellhousing that you can remove and check to see if the bolts are loose.

Not saying that's your problem, but it could be. Do you hear any noise when just idling?

EDIT: For some reason I didn't see page 2 of this thread before posting this, just ignore this post lol. Glad you found your problem

So the grinding has permanently damaged my e fan so I need a new one, and I replaced that in June. :/
Thanks for all the help guys.
