Kinda long shot fix, but.. If you have the plastic tank it is equipped with a screw on top. You can use a long flathead screwdriver and hammer to tap it tight. Mine was loose (twice) and fuel smell and some spillage when filling tank were symptoms.. As you said, this was when affording a full tank wasn't an issue, but it might be worthy of the 5 min to check.

Edit- oh yea, hope ur day ends better than started man.

turns out gas is leaking off the top of the gas tank after all...

guess its getting dropped tomorrow

Be careful tapping that metal retainer ring. About 9 out of 10 of them are totally rusted away. If you are dropping the tank, replace it.
