Got a leak coming down passenger side front knuckle... ?
Can anyone here fill me in...
I've got a pretty heavy drip coming out of the passenger side of the front axle I believe...
Axle shaft seal or something?
Getting about a tennis ball sized wetspot on the ground over night from the liquid dripping down off of the front passenger side steering knuckle.
Is this the same fluid that would be put in where the diff cover is?
Should I check the level there?
Any ideas?
Easy to fix, cheap, expensive, pain in the ***???
The ol' 96 XJ's got about 178,000 on the clock. I've only owned it for about a year and half. Just started this dripping (knock on wood, surprisingly, for that many miles, this is the only drip I've seen, and I've checked all other fluid levels I could access).
Please point me in the right direction here. I
Appreciate any help, tips, or input.
Thanks!

that would be your the inner seals on the carrier housing unfortunately youl have to pull out your carrier to replace them. When you do it replace both of them and make sure to put the shims back where they came from if they arent pressed on behind the bearings and then check your gears if you dont know how to check your gears i would not recomend doing this yourself.

Thanks for the reply...
I was kind of thinking it was something along those lines.
Wish I had a lift. I don't feel like tearing into the gears on my back in this heat, haha!
I'll have to look into what axle this Jeep has and what's involved. I've helped swap gears and a Tru-trac on a GM 8.6", so maybe I could tackle this one as well if I can get my buddy with his garage shop to help again.
Too bad I've already decided not to dump money into this XJ, otherwise this sounds like it might not be a bad time to be putting in an air locker or something!
Anyone else have any tips, or part numbers, or photos, etc, please don't hesitate to post up!
Thanks again!

I have the exact same problem...and from what i've read it appears that this may not be as simple a fix as i thought it was...is it really complicated or just time consuming?

it not hard you just need the tools to check the gears to make sure they are setup correctly which most people dont have pretty much anyone can change the seals it aking sure the gear are installed correctly ive heard of people doing this and not checking the gears but i would not recomend that

Would it hurt anything if i just kept my diff fluid topped off because im kind of limited on funds at the moment and i deffinately don't have the experience to mess around with my carrier on my own just yet

That's all I've been able to do for the past week... but honestly, it's not much more than just a sloppy band-aid fix the way I look at it.
