Question Got a great dumb question

I think i am going to start my rear bumper with hinge out tire carrier shortly. I have looked at numerous homemade ones and aftermarket ones for design ques. The dumb question is Why do all of them hinge on the pass side of the jeep? is there a resoning behind this?

Reason i am asking is because mine isnt going to sit exactly middle of my jeep and if i hinge it on the drivers side i would still be able to look out part of the back window on the pass side.

appreciate any answers i can get

1 thought comes to my mind is if you break down on the side of the road and its on the drivers side and for some reason need to open the hatch it could swing into traffic?? only thing that comes to mind

I've seen this once. It was really awkward and I couldn't stop staring at it.

The lift gate shock wouldn't hold up. Unless you were to find a stronger shock the same size.

If you changed the mounting to the side of the door like a Land Rover that idea would work easily.

there would be no way to fasten to the lift gate and expect it to ever work out right.

And as far as securing it to the side of the jeep is that there is nothing there any were close enough to attach to. i do plan on putting armor there but still not a very good place to put weight on.

I am pretty firm on a bumper mount(maybe a hitch mount as a starter just for a quick and easy temp solution)

I was just wondering why the pass side even though i am pretty sure the first response was the right response

i know why the put the tire on the pass side but not sure why it swings that way. the put the tire off center so they can still backup. and so a tire isnt hangin off the side of the XJ into oncomig traffic

Hmm... mine is hinged on the drivers side. I built it that way, because I wanted to be different.

If I had to build it again, I would push the tire further across the back of the Jeep. Right now I have to swing the carrier almost all the way open to open the hatch. It can be a bit of a pain and there have been instances that made it a little tough to do.
