What does the crank position sensor use to pick up it's signal? I know the flywheel, but are there magnets in the flywheel?

The sensitive magnet inside the CPS picks up the flywheel teeth as they pass by. Being metal, it is inherently paramagnetic, and so the sensor can detect the presence or absence of a notch or "tooth" on the circumference of the flywheel.

Keep in mind that it isn't that sensitive and the space between the sensor and teeth cannot be too great.

is the sensor adjustable? I had it out a couple times, but I don't remember if the slots on the sensor are notched.

The sensor is not adjustable, and should reliably mount in the same position. It's mounting spot is pretty precise... The only "adjustment" you could do is pick up the CPS that has been factory adjusted for high altitude. Do you suspect your CPS isn't working?

Here is a picture of a Chrysler Flexplate. It has that ring attached to it with those square holes thru it. When it spins the CPS picks up where those holes and communicates it to the Computer and Cam Sensor. Thats my understanding of it at least.

Flexplate! Not flywheel. Thank you. And that's exactly how it works. You can't really see it in that pic but I'm pretty sure at some point there's a bigger notch to let the sensor know when it has made a full revolution.

I have several threads on here about this jeep. Got it running on Monday, went to go to work Tuesday morning and it won't start again. I just pushed in the garage to warm up overnight and am going to jump on it tomorrow. It will attempt to start sometimes, but will not stay running. It's getting plenty of fuel. Replaced all the tune up stuff, plus the timing chain. I swapped out the kps with another used one,so I'm pretty sure it is not that. I'm wondering if possibly the cam sensor under the dist cap.

I misunderstood what you typed sorry. It's been a long day and for some reason I actually thought you were talking about reading all the little teeth along the outside of it.
