this is gonna be long
Let me start from the beginning so we are all on the same page.I bought a 95 4dr 4.0 5sp 4wd in great shape. The story on the motor is a friend had a 96 xj put a crate 4.0 in it,wrecked it and they bought the motor.10-15k tops and it looked it.I pulled a plug didn't look too bad little sooty. No oil in the intake, breather box, hoses, anywhere.turned over good.
They couldn't get it to fire.I bought it,got it home and started working on testing all the sensors.I had searched some sites beforehand so I was prepared.First thing I checked was the crank sensor. It was laying on the bell housing but brand new.Searched and found the bolts.Still no start.
Great guy over on NAXJA sent me a fsm and wire diagram.Found out I had no sensor ground to the ecc. There was a bare spot of wire showing on the black groundwire for the cam sensor(new).I took another piece of black wire and ran it to the negative terminal. She fired up,but ran like crap.Smelt like it too.
I should add that this jeep had sat for almost 5 years.Got a fuel filter, some lucas, some seafoam, and filled it up.I had already bought wires, plugs, cap, rotor. It still ran really bad.
Decided to double check wires and found them off.I just replaced them one at a time taking for granted they were right.Fired it up and she purred.I had one cel and it was o2 sensor.I don't have a cat so I figured that was why.
Drove it for 2500-3000 miles and I start to have a little bit of a miss while idling and cruising 55-65.It comes and goes.Left on a 45 minute drive,15 minutes driving 65-70 it starts sputtering like it's out of gas.Moving the gas pedal seems to help.Turn around and go back.
2nd new filter goes on.I shake out all kinds off rust and crud from filter.Fixed that.Drive a few days and it starts again, more often.Gets to where when about the time it warms up it starts doing it.
Go outside in the morning gonna go borrow my fuel pressure gauge that I lent out.Start the jeep and it's running good with just a little stumble now and then.Shut it off go in and fill coffee cup.Come back out and nothing.Everything works, power to the starter, power to it when key is turned.Have starter tested,it's good.buy new cables and clamps.
While this is going on I try to chase down my sputtering problem. It has a new tps, cps, cks, map.AH HA the mat sensor is all cracked, dirty and loose.AH HA the coil has cracks all over it and it's loose too.
It runs even worse now.I have a surging idle, cuts out at high rpm.The thing sounds like a diesel, spark knock would be my guess.I am going to get a fuel pressure gauge tomorrow and hope it's fuel related.I'm kinda reluctant to jump into it though,I got a feeling I need a take too.Oh yeah my fuel gauge quit working slowly. It worked at first, then it read to a half, now nothing.I even put another ground to the tank.didn't work.
So my question is, do you think it's the fuel pump?I think 5yrs of gas sitting in that tank ruined it.Now the pump is gonna go.Anybody got a tank and sending unit for sale?
Or maybe not,What do you think?

I got a tank here local for $50,they dropped it.
I went ahead and bought another new filter.Blew my lines out and stuck a new regulator on.I should have everything done tomorrow,I hope.
I really can't believe it ran as long as it did.Actually it still ran, just not very well.
