Default God help me 98 xj

Ok my fellow xj lovers I need help. Please the last 2 months or so my 98 xj has been sputtering back fire thumping what ever u call it no check engine lite so I took it to get checked and pulled a 1281 I think fuel code. So my buddy who is a mechanic looked at the jeep we found the fuel relay in the block was making contact so I replaced the fuse connecter and fuse. Jeep is still doing its gun shot ****. When it does it my speedo and tack act funny And my fuel gage drops. Does anyone have any idea I'm lost and about to give up.

Amy other codes? If you can post them specifically you can get more of an idea what is going on.

P1281-ENGINE IS COLD TOO LONG

Set Condition: The engine does not warm to 176 deg. F while driving for 20 minutes after start. Does not put CEL on.

Coolant level too low.

Thermostart stuck open.

~~~~~~~~~~
As far as engine acting up, it could be the Coolant Temperature Sensor, but if it's defective you may get a CEL.
As far as loosing gauges, you should check and clean the three major ground points in the engine bay, including the battery post connectors.
I have no idea what you are talking about when say "we found the fuel relay in the block was making contact"
I suggest you have your codes read again and write down each code exactly as they appear on the code reader/scanner, then come back and post the codes here, not an interpretation of what the codes may mean.
I have had a very similar problem. The fix was to clean the battery terminals. As silly as it sounds, it was free, easy, and worked.
