Default Glove box lock removal

So, anyone ever removed the lock from their glove box? Didn’t find it thru searching. I need to swap the locks out so I can lock it with the same key as the rest of the jeep uses. It’s a 98. I swapped my mist gray interior with slate. I could just swap the front panels but the glove box that uses the correct key is filthy and the one in my XJ looks like new. I’d really rather swap just the locks and not have to spend the time cleaning the other.

I read how to do it on other vehicles. They say to turn the key then insert a screwdriver into the hole located under the lock cylinder. Push in with screwdriver and then turn key farther. While there is a hole under the lock cylinder it doesn’t seem to do anything when inserting screwdriver.

I just also realized the handle on one is mist gray and the other agate. So I would have an agate glove box with mist gray handle. Not the end of the world I guess. Especially since I still have mist gray door panels. Haven't found a set of agate panels for manual doors yet.

I think there's a pin inside that holds the lock in the handle. You don't have to turn the key to depress that pin, but turn it after depressing it so it will clear the slot it's in. At least I think that's how it's done. Older Chevys had a hole in the ignition lock and you had to insert your proper key, then slide a pin into that hole, and you can extract the tumbler system.

I tried all ways possible can’t figure it out. Looks like I’ll be swapping the face panel. If I ever do find out how I’ll post it here. There’s videos and articles on how to remove it from every jeep but the Cherokee.

Did you ever figure out how to get the lock off the glove box?

I swapped the face panel in mine just because I was doing an interior swap and had a salvaged glove box with a good panel, but the mounting portion was ripped and torn, so made a good one out of two. Never could figure out how to actually remove the lock though. Not that hard to re-key,Use the key you want to use with it and insert a jewelers screwdriver or paper clip in the small hole and turn the key back and forth a few times. It will re-key to the key you are using. Just have to play with it a bit, I was actually surprised that it worked and actually made it happen by accident, so didn't keep track of the actual steps that were successful. Wish I had, could have made some money on YouTube...LOL!

Figured this out by accident. Insert a key in the unlocked position, then push the pin inside the tiny hole. Then turn the key BACKWARDS. NOT the direction you would turn it to lock it. Then push the lock out from the inside.

push up through hole with Allen wrench on centered pin inside the hole, turn key clockwise, it will feel like something will snap or break, push on the back of the cylinder, it will click or snap and slide out
