Default Glove box trouble

In short, my glove box doesn't open. And just incase you where a smart @$$, NO, it isnt locked. :-P When I go to school, I lock the face of my stereo in there so it does get used. I went to get my head sock out of there when I went to the go cart track today and it wouldnt open. I have a 1990 which has the two buttons on either side of the lock. The left botton pushes in but the right one i stuck in what seems to be the open position. Does anyone have a secret way of getting into these short of a pry bar or a BFH?

Thanks for the help

By design, the two sided latch wont let you pry open the glove box if only one side is released. Just a thought! I would (riggy as it sounds) use channel locks to force the issue. IE pinch the two buttons together....Damage --prob. but i would think it will be less than the damage you could cause by prying against the always old and dry plastic found on older xj's

Is this a common problem with XJs? Is this something I could find a replacement for at junkyards?

it's not common, but it has been known to happen.

the little cover over the key tumbler on it does pop off...use a small flat head.

from there, you should be able to figure out why the one won't pop properly and open it, so long as it's not locked.

and yes, you can find replacements at the yard...just grab one, and swap your key tumbler into it.

I have the same issue with my 91 Cherokee. I got a replacement lock from the junk yard, but I cannot seem to figure out how to remove the cylinder to swap them out?
I know I have to be missing something simple, but I dont see it?
Help is much appreciated.

Thanks for the link, but that is not the style lock on my 91 XJ. I just cant figure out how to get the tumbler out.
It looks to have two prongs on the back of the housing that holds in the tumbler, but even after prying them out, I cannot remove the cylinder???

Default Glove box Tumbler

I got it out.
The trick is the two small prongs on the back hold in the tumbler, and getting them both pried out of the way together is the solution.
I used two small screwdrivers, and a second pair of hands to push the tumbler down and out.
It really is something simple, just a little tough without help or a bench viceto hold it steady.
Thanks for all the advice.

Default Turn clockwise 1/8

For mine I had to turn depress the pin in the bottom and turn clockwise an 1/8 turn and it popped out. Good luck
