the one you decide to look for after you use the search function I know this question has been discussed at least a couple of times here in the past week.

And after he uses the Search Function and finds a 5 year old thread are you going to respond with ....

Wow, talk about resurrecting an ancient thread!

You know that will happen!

SEARCH <--- you'll be damned if you don't, and damned if you do!

As to the question:

I would look for same year to replace, that way it will be plug and play with minimal issues.

If you change years, you may have to transfer some components back and forth.

In my lovely repressive state we have an emission law that says basically ...

" if you replace the motor in your vehicle it must come from the same model year or newer. "

if you find the 5 year old thread before the 2 day old one, you're doing it wrong... having a bad day?

ok, since obviously searching is taboo for some...
and helping is the same for others...

if you ave a 99 you might as well just ask for a 99, that way, theoretically everything should be the same if not really freakin close and should be able to provide plug and play.
You can go with the 01 but you really wont be gaining anything in 2 years except possibility that the engine has less miles or something. But then again, my 87 has less than 90xxx miles on it so thats really not a reason to go up in years.

JY motors all carry the same inherent risk. Dont really know the condition its in or the condition that the owner left it in. Of course getting one from some guy of CL is technically the same cause you dont know if he is lying to offload it or not.

So just go for it.
You just tell em, "I want a Jeep Cherokee 4.0 I6 engine with less than XXXXX miles and between these models years 9x-xx" the x's represent the miles and years You want.

Personally, if the price difference isnt alot, and i was you i would just ask for less than 150xxx if possible and between 97-01
but since i have a 87 i of course would ask for something for my model year, renix engine...

Good luck

in 99 alot of them still had distributors... in 00-01 they had coil packs, and the crack prone 0331 head.

You still can use a 2000-01 block for a 1999, just use all your other parts and piece's from the '99.It doesn't matter that the 2000-01 had no distributor the hole is the same size to drop one into it just remove the cam sensor, and drive mechinism,SIMPLE swap. But it is a junk yard motor, and a short block really doesn't cost that much, plus it will have a real warrenty and it's NEW.
