Default Generator light/low voltage

Hello all, so i drive my '96 xj about an hr this morning, got back in it about 4 hrs later and noticed my voltage won't go above 10/12, I put the a/c on and it dropped to about 8, and the generator light came on and stayed on the whole time I was driving, I took the chance and made the hr drive and made it, I know my belt needs to be changed, would this be an alternator and or battery problem? I did notice a few times the battery seemed weaker when we had the 98 degree weather for 6 days straight, thanks for any help
