i was looking it up and for the price i pay for a new gear i can replace the whole instrument cluster...
would you all say gear or whole thing?

I am no expert, but are you refering to the gear you replace to correct the speedometer reading? If so I think it is just like my 93 xj, all you need is the gear that goes into the transfer case, about $50 for a new one online from various places.
What you need to know is the gear ratio in the axles and the tire diameter. For example I just changed mine out, i have 31" tires and 3.55 gears in the axle, so based upon info on the morris 4x4 speedo gear chart I purchased a speedo gear with 32 teeth versus the factory 35 tooth gear.
Hopefully this info helps. I forgot to mention you should have a metal tag on the rear diff that attached to one of the cover bolts that states the gear ratio inside(unless the gears have been changed)

Unless you are really off, Do what I did. Use a gps to tell how far off you are, and then just learn to adjust your speed accordingly. mine is off by about 6%.
The plus of being off with larger tires is that your odometer turns over slower, so you kind of get a rollback for free over time!
