i have 4.56 on my 35" mudders with my 94 cherokee and love them but 4.56 is to much gear for 33's unless you plan on 35's in the future then stick with 4.10's

yea I would go with 4:10 for DD and 33s even if you run 35s someday will work great with the 5 speed 4:56 is better for an auto IMO

the 5 speed needs less gear than an auto to start with...they have better ratios in the trans you could get away with 3:73s but that would be kinda dumb....forget 4:88s they are not gonna work for ya to steep you'll be looking for another gear in the trans... 4:56 would be max but still kinda steep..i have 4:10s in my chevy with 36s and i really wish i had overdrive i have 4:10s in my XJ and it's running 2200 at 60ish and happy with 32s. more gear will mean higher rpm on the highway and it will make first gear useless on the road

Your gearing is to high for running 38s with a straight 6 where I live anyway. It is a lot different when you need power and torque to climb hills, and the 1744 rpms or so at 65 is just not in the power range. I think the 2384 that the OP would be running at 65 with 4.56 would be about perfect. One thing your formula doesn't address is the extra rolling resistance and drag of larger tires and increased height.

I keep reading that you don't need as low of gears ( numerically higher ) if you run a manual, this is not true. The torque converter makes it possible to use taller gears (numerically lower ) than the manual that is why a good crawl ratio for an auto is in the neighborhood of 45-55 to 1 where a crawl ratio of 60-80 to 1 is good for a manual.
