Default Gauge cluster acting up

Got a 98 xj here and at random moments the speedometer and tachometer will drop to 0 and show no readings. What could be causing this?

Also, a good smack on the dash will momentarily fix this problem. Haha

You have loose or dirty connections on the back of the cluster.
This is a common problem with the XJ's.

I have a similiar thing happen with my 98 cherokee but my airbag light comes on also. I can get it everything working by jiggling the wiper switch a few times. Is this probably the same problem?

Thanks

Kevin

I have the same problem with my 98. I just smack the dash above the cluster and it fixes it every time. Lol

same problem here haha, usually every gauge goes dead and the airbag light comes on. i recall reading somewhere that since there is an airbag recall on some of our xjs (at least on mine there is) it has to do with a certain wire associated with the airbags, and it causes that problem with all the gauges. cant remember where i saw that though

This happens on my '98 every once in a while as well.. I just push the cluster in (instead of a dash smack) and hope it will help tighten the connections on the back of the cluster
