Mine does that too, but its cause the guy I bought it from put a fuel pump from an '89 in my '92. Do you know if your fuel pump is the right year? Did it just start doing it?

I have found that if they run backwards they are the wrong sending unit, someone installed the wrong one,if they get stuck it is due to the float gets a small hole in it or the needle is nol longer touching the resistor, they get bent and loose contact, either way tou have to rmove it.
i had a 91 and put a pump in it from my pile of jeep parts and it did the same thing then i read in jp that if you put the wrong pump in it it will do that change the pump if it bothers you really bad

Yah, its prob the wrong year pump/sending unit. A new one is about $100. If it runs good I say don't worry about it til it takes a crap on you. Just remember its backwards...you'll get used to it.
