Default gas gauge acting up

Hey guys my gas gauge has been acting funny here lately I just recently lifted it 4.5 inches and put 32 inch tires on it. Before, when it was stock I never had any problems with it floating or anything but now it seems like from 1/2 tank to empty is gone in no time but if I fill her up it'll go a good while also when I crank it up sometimes it does not give the correct read of how much gas I know is in it. I was thinking the fuel pump could be the cause but just a guess any ideas? 1998 xj 135000 miles

And the winner is ......... ILLICIT!! Had a buddies do the exact thing (he annoyed the $%^& out of me but tracking mileage over fixing it.) When we finally tore it down to fix it we started doing parts swap and the sending unit was bad. I saw in another thread that it can be caused by changing the absolute level of the jeep with the new lift kit (something like the rear sits down 15 degrees after being lifted.) but have no idea if that's true.

Yeah my 98 Sport likes to act up a lot too. Sometimes reading about empty for a bit before finally reading the right level. She has 360,000km (223,000mi) so not really surprised lol.

Seems to be pretty common, the gas light comes on in my 92 when I'm at around 6 gallons. Likely the the sender unit, I'm just going to deal with it until I have to replace the fuel pump. Better to have it under read than over read.

also having same conflict with my 98. it's lifted 3.5 on 32's but it apperas the same angle as stock so i highly doubt its that mostlikely its the float on the sending unit. the unit's float slides instead of pivoting so it can stick and or jump around. i find it just as easy to track milage. on my setup i'll get 260-275miles a tank. roughly 15-17mpg which kiss the spit out of my other ride (23' camper with 460 sounding like frigging nascar)

I think they need to have a recall on it. Almost every 98 XJ ive seen has a fuel sending unit problem.

$199 at Autozone,Advance and Oreilly. Rockauto.com is the cheapest ive found so far. $148.99 for Airtex which is the same one autozone and the others have. Or $126.89 for Spectra. You have to buy the whole fuel pump module.
