I've decided to go with full width D60 rear and D44 front for my XJ. I want to get these out of the JY and build them myself. Problem is I'm not super knowledgable when it comes to axles. What would be the best vehicles to snag these from (keep in mind I want a passanger side pumpkin for the front)? And how do I tell the difference between a Ford D60 and D61? Just need some ideas to get me on the right track in my hunt. Thanks in advance

and from what i've heard the most desirable d60's, 44's, are out of late 70's fords

Find a late 70s to early 80 Chevy 3/4 ton. The front could be a 44 or 10 bolt which are almost identical. This will most likely come with a 14 bolt rear which is stronger than a Dana 70 which is a plus. Just make sure the rear is a full float. You would be better off getting a 60 front out of a 1 ton. Either way it will be a low pinion axle because Dana never made a high pinion 44 or 60 in a passenger drop. The 60s out of Chevys are a lot cheaper than driver drop 60s and are about the same amount as the 44 and 10 bolt.

Just out of curiosity, does anyone know what front/rear axles came in the 80's and early 90's Ford F250s? My local junkyard is full of these.

 

older ram 4x4 have passenger side Dana 60s and 73-87 chevs have pass side dana 44s, I have the chevy ones in my cj3.

I think in early 80 the f250 went to TTB which isn't a solid axle but not exactly IFS either but not worth building. In 99 the went back to solid axles using a D50 front and Sterling front with a metric bolt pattern. 78 and 79 F250s had front 44s and rear 60s and the snow fighter editions had 60 fronts which are the best axle for a linked suspension because they have a longer driverside tube than most 60s. I got mine out of a 78 model but wish I had used a front 60.
