I have a 96 that runs for about 5 to 10 seconds after the key is turned off. I also stalls when I let off the throttle, but only once in a while. I have done no mods under the hood.

sounds like a an ignition issue. could also be a bad computer.

it sounds like its running to rich to me.

which means when you shut it off it stays running because the left over fuel is ignited by the previous ignition. or a few injectors are staying open to long.. which would mean dirty injectors.

I wouldn't think previous ignition would keep it running 5-10 seconds though; wouldn't that need a spark? 5 seconds at 1K RPM is around 80 more revs of the engine after he's shut it off. I'd go with Tural's and start at the key, make sure it is disengaging the ignition when you turn it to "off." In the case of dirty injectors, take them out & clean them or Seafoam your gastank.

it's called dieseling. i've always been told it's a timing issue.

Otherwise known as preignition. It was a common problem on cars in the '70s when they were forced to use lower octane fuel and switch to unleaded gas.
Haven't seen/heard it in a while though. Sounds like a diesel running when it happens, until it dies from the heat being dissipated and the process stops.
It could be caused by carbon build up in the combustion chambers. Or a need for a tune up. JMO

I'm not saying that's your problem though. Yours is more than likely an electrical issue. IMO

It's dieseling. In our engine it comes from carbon build-up and leaky injectors. With less than half a tank of gas, run 1/2 a can thru the brake vacuum line, then shut it off, put the rest into the tank drive till almost out of fuel and refuel the next 2-3 tank worth with highest Octane fuel you can. Should clear it up. Avoid CHEAP NO Name gas. Crappy gas causes more build up.

he's right. leaned out fuel does combust without ignition. that's how motors usually detonate. had a monte carlo that did that, but it was carburated so we traced it down to timing. with all the sensors and gadgets, i would think it would kinda hard to diesel on a fuel injected motor, but then again, weirder things have happened.

Its definatily the key. I tried a few things and it shuts right off. Have to get a new ignition

If that doesn't solve you problem try running a bottle of fuel system cleaner through it and then switch your spark plugs to the next coldest heat range.

hmmm i have this same problem..i wonder if when whoever(PO) rebuilt my steering column after the jeep got stolen messed up my ignition..thats gonna suck what would i do to pin point it to the ignition??
