Default full-time 4x4; Maximum Speed MECHANICALLY Speaking.

Hey guys! Glad to find a forum dedicated to a new lifestyle I'm pretty new to the whole 4x4 realm, and ned some input. I've got the NP231, (Full time AND part time), and a friend who owns a trans shop. He's claiming that Full-time should NOT be used on the freeways, and NOT above 55mph. I've not read of any speed-caps when engaged in FT... from a mechanical perspective, IS full-time detrimental to your drive system at speeds exceeding 55?

If you have full time, it's a NP242

You can use it on any legal speed (I have used it on 75 mph) and didn't have any problems. Full time are created so u can use it on dry pavement as well including freeways

First of all the np 231 transfer case only has the part time option. You have the np 242 which offers full time and part time. The part time option should not be used on pavement or dry, paved surfaces. This is because both axles are moving at the exact same speed which can't happen when turning on pavement, which causes "gear bind" if in part time in these conditions. When in part time, your only moving 2 wheels, 1 on the front axle and 1 on the back axle (unless you have lockers). Full time 4wd can be used on any Surface. And can be used on pavement and dry road conditions, when in full time, you are actually only moving 1 wheel at a time, but it can be on either axle, depending on where it is needed. Part time is usually the one you want to use off road and full time is the one you want to use in the winter when it's snowy/icy and you want that 4wd. Vehicles that are permanent 4wd or "all wheel drive" is basically full time 4wd. So part time can be used only part of the time (in off road conditions) and full time can be used full time, in any condition, on or off road. And I'm almost positive the speed doesn't matter in full time

FullTime and PartTime can handle whatever speed the jeep can go. And can be shifted into at any speed. PartTime should not be used on pavement.

Here is a Vid to watch.. Done this with the np 242 and 231.. You have the 242 if there is full time and par time.

Like the others have posted on a freeway you should not be using 4wd at speeds over 50-55 anyway as usually they are mostly clean and that is bad for any full time 4wd.

I've read this story many times (isn't it in Cruiser's signature?) but my 231 grinds terribly when I try shifting into 4H at any speed above 5 mph. I wonder what's broken. Oh well, it works fine otherwise but I'm a little jelly of all you folks with the shift-on-the-flys feature.

Are you releasing the accelerator when you shift.

I think so. It's been a while since I last tried and I don't remember for sure.
