Fuel Pump replacement problem
l have a 97 xj. I recently replaced my fuel pump as it was going bad: old, winding noise while driving, car would die when hot, stall, etc.
After putting the new pump on, the car hesitates to start a bit. After parking the car this afternoon, I went around the car looking for leaks or signs of problems. I went to the Fuel Rail and tested the Valve **** to see if there was any pressure....No fuel came out.
Not quite sure what to do here. Any advice for trouble shooting would be appreciated...something doesn't seem right about it.
Thanks!

Did you replace the inline fuel filter?
Get a fuel pressure test gauge (You can get one from Harbor Freight for cheap), hook it up and see what you got with the car running.

I wonder if your new pump assembly has a bad check valve. My 99 hesitates to start.
Next time you go to start the XJ try “priming” the system first, it’s easy and will either confirm the check valve is the issue or something else. Turn the key to the “run” position for 5 seconds (do not crank the engine over), then off again. Do this 3-4 times. Then on the 5th time start the engine normally. If it starts right up then you know it’s the check valve. Unfortunately this means your new pump assembly is faulty, but at least you’ll know what the issue is!
