Default noisy fuel pump

So, i have replaced my damn fuel pump twice now. the first one was old. so i brought a new one in. then it died because the positive wire touched the metal housing around the fuel pump(shorted it out) so now i have my 3rd fuel pump. I put it in and it works just great. but about a week or so later it started making sounds.. like really loud. when its nice and cold, or hasnt been on in awhile it is silent untill 10 minutes into driving. it then gets louder, and louder, and louder untill it is so loud that i feel like im driving a time bomb. it will even be louder then my radio at times. WHAT COULD BE CAUSING THIS LOUD NOISE COMING FROM MY FUEL PUMP

Gotta ask this question.

What BRAND of fuel pump is it?

If it is an Airtex, get it out of there. They are known for reliability issues right out of the box. I won't install them or recommend them to anyone.

Generally speaking, a fuel pump that "progressively" gets louder is most likely going to eventually fail.

I guarantee, the problem is NOT with the Airtex pump.
They are the Top supplier of fuel pumps in the aftermarket, supply many OE fuel pumps found in today's vehicles, as well as supply the US Military.
When it comes time to eventually replace my Jeep's factory fuel pump, I WILL be using an Airtex pump.

When you replaced the pump, did you also replace the strainer before the pump, the fuel filter after the pump, AND clean all the sediment out of the tank?

Fuel pump strainer and inline fuel filter replacement does not take the
place of cleaning a dirty, contaminated fuel tank!
Remember, the Major Causes of Fuel Pump Failure Are:
– Rust, corrosion or other contamination in the vehicle’s
fuel tank
– Clogged or plugged fuel filters and strainers
– Faulty on-vehicle fuel pump wiring or connectors
When Replacing a Fuel Pump, ALWAYS...
– Replace the filter or strainer with new
– Professionally flush or clean the fuel tank
– Inspect, repair, or replace suspect vehicle connectors
and wiring
– Refer to the Diagnostic/Troubleshooting and Installation
Guidelines document found in the fuel pump box

No matter who they are a supplier to, too much direct evidence against Airtex.

And peronal experience as well.

I will continue to recommend that people not purchase them.

I 100% agree i will never get and airtek again or let someone that i know get one. I eventually got a bosch and the thing works fine. If you heard the airtek it sounded like it could blow up any second. Im not talking about a little sound im saying construction workers look at you when you pass thinking wtf? I put two airteks both hummed very loud! Put the bosch in three months ago. Havent heard a sound from the thing.

Seeing the price of other pumps & new to jeeps I went for the Airtex pump about 2 months ago (like 92.00 free shipped from e bay). I installed new assembly with filter & inadvertly broke the float arm plastic area where rod clips onto. I was able to transfer my oem complete float electronic & all to Airtex. So far great no noise reads dead on. Lucky I guess. If I was you I would go with a different one also change the karma

I wish I would have read this thread before I bought an Airtek fuel pump. I'm starting to have fuel issues a few months after installing it and it is so freakin loud!

I have experience AGAINST airtex as well on this one.

Replaced pump, filter and strainer about 2 months ago. first impressions were wow my jeeps fixed now and dam this things loud!!!!! Right in the middle of a trail run POS started failing me luckily made it about 3 miles from home before it quit completely. Not to mention the sending unit is no where near accurate, reads less than 3/4 tank when full. So put another tally on the FAIL side for airtex. POS!!!!!!

So taking it back this week and getting a Delphi or Bosch unit along with a used oem sending unit from local jeep yard.

Richieb9 where did u get bosch unit from? did it come as kit with strainer, hose, connector etc or just with pump?
