First time posting here but I have been using info found in threads here for quite awhile to keep my 1995 Cherokee on the road. I have owned the xj for about a year now and one of the first things I did was to replace the whole fuel pump hanger assembly in order to get the gas gauge to work. The problem I am having is that after driving the rig during hot weather, 90* or hotter, the fuel pump will get so loud that is hard to carry on a converstion inside the car. When the pump gets loud like that, it is only a matter of time until the engine starts to stumble and eventually dies. When it dies, I have to let it sit for about 20 minutes to cool off. It will start an run fine for awhile, 5-10 minutes, before it starts stumbling and dies again. This only happens when it is hot out, no problems at night or when the temps are cooler. I have replace the crankshaft position sensor and the TPS. I'm starting to thing that my replacement fuel pump is bad. Has anyone else dealt with a similar issue?
Thanks,
John

Sounds like the tank may not be venting, a hose swelling shut or something. Next time the pump gets loud, loosen the fuel cap and see if the tank is pressurized... It should go back to running like normal if you leave the cap cranked, but it's not a good idea to leave it that way...

It is called "Vapor Lock".
Your gas tank is getting hot, and so is the gas inside of it.
When I was in Ouray, CO it was nice and quiet even at 10-14,000 feet. Of course it never got hot. But as soon as I started driving home the fuel pump got very loud, and it stumbled a bit.
So on my drive I would top up the tank when ever it got to about 1/2 a tank. The cooler gas going in seamed to take care of that quite a bit.
Right now I am thinking of ways to mitigate heat at the gas tank.
Your fuel lines also bolt directly to the bottom of the intake manifold which gets very hot too.
I would love to hear if anyone here has had positive solutions to this problem.
BTW. This problem in the Full Size Jeep world is even worse than in the XJ world.

Well it happened again this afternoon. Hot day and I heard the fuel pump getting louder then it died at a stoplight. Pushed it to the curb, waited 10 minutes and it fired up and I was able to limp it home. Is there a good way to test the carbon canister to see if it is plugged?
I am wondering if this happens all the time, when there is less gas in the tank, etc.
Cause the fuel in the tank helps cool the fuel pump.
I could see a 1/4 tank of gas and a defective fuel pump causing this.

It definelty seems to happen faster when the tank is empty. It did shutdown with 3/4 of a tank the other day after it had been running for about an hour. Yesterday it shut off in about 30 min with less than a quater tank. It does seem to alleviate the problem for awhile if I add some fresh (cooler) gas to the tank when it dies.

Over the years there have been threads of bad out of the box aftermarket pumps.
Some are better then others.
For older XJ's sometimes the choices are limited though.
Even the Bosch's that everybody recommends for the '97 and up seem to come and go in availability.
And thinking things are just going to get worse down the road.
