Default Fuel pump growl 1990 cherokee

Gentlemen ,
Dont laugh when I ask this ! This is my first jeep . Well here goes ! The fuel pump u I can here it running all the time . Its a loud grrr all the time. I mean I can here it even at high way speeds over the growl of the tires ! Is this normal ? Its in a 1990 jeep cherokee 4x4 . Is this a sign its going bad or should be replaced along with the filter ? Thank You !
Brad

I changed my fuel pump last year right before hunting, while we was driving up the hill my fuel pump did the same thing. That was last oct. last week it finely went out on me. too be safe, if you know its the fuel pump, i would change it. i would hate to be stuck somewhere because of it.
We did not drop the tank, it was the easiest fuel pump ive ever done btw.

Yep, noisy pump usually means it's getting ready to die. If you decide to replace, make sure you get a Bosch or similar, not an Airtex. I don't like to rag on products but I've read so many accounts of them failing prematurely or not working straight out of the box that they're worth avoiding. Maybe Cruiser has something to offer regarding the ballast resistor (ceramic thing on driver's side inner fender) but I think it's just your fuel pump.

If you can hear it on the highway over the tires with a full tank it's the pump look for a Bosch or factory mopar one... Don't cheap out on the pump also flush out your fuel system and change the filter have a great day

I had an 88 which I replaced the fuel pump on, because the old one was clogged with melted rubber something about the new way the did gas eating up the rubber I guess. Anyway super easy to do however it always made noise as loud ad your describing and I drove it for two years with no problems. My trans went out so I sold it, I see it around town from time to time. I don't know what brand it was unfortunately my auto teacher ordered it for me.

Love the fact you can change your fuel pump with no more then a flat head screwdriver. Oh and if you are installing an airtex you have to use the old rubber o-rings off the orig fuel pump. the two that it comes with does not work. same pump that caused me problems and i would advise not getting that brand
