On your year, the filter should be part pf the pump assembly. The older XJ's had the filter mounted outside the tank. As far as pumps go, get a Bosch or Carter and stay away from Airtex. There have been too many problems reported with these.

I'm with the other guys on this.
Bosch is absolutely my first choice. Carter is my second choice. I do not have a third choice. I will not install nor will I recommend any Airtex fuel pump products for the XJ.
I also agree that replacing the entire "fuel pump assembly" is your best bet while you have the gas tank down. Here is a link to a thread that you should review before digging in.

You dont need to take the tank down to change the fuel pump and just to throw my 2 cents in Ive used delphi fuel pumps on all my jeeps. Never had a problem an they have a lifetime warranty. I actually just put one in my newest jeep this morning

Because the one in the tank protects the pump itself. If you leave that out, I wouldn't bet on the pump lasting very long.
Ok sweet guys I appreciate all the info and yes there is absolutely no way to change the pump with the tank in. Also I need to tackel my heatercore as well so I was going to download a manual off the internet cause haynes and chilton are junk atleast for the sport they are has any one used these are they good?

Not possible! You do need to drop the tank to change out the pump. On the older models when they where mounting the pump on the front of the tank you didn't have to drop the tank. But on the later models with the pump mounted in the center you do have to drop the tank or you will never be able to access the pump.
