I ran the fuel tank completely dry and since then the problems started. While driving the engine stalls from time to time. But last trip into town it became completely unbearable. During the 5 mile trip the engine constantly stalled and picked up again. But I was not able to get above 30mph and for most of the trip well below that. Even to the point that I was driving 30mph and prr prr, and engine turned off completely!

Here some other characteristics
- pressing the throttle deeper makes it worse
- cornering seems to make it worse
- no problems starting the car
- no problems revving in park, even full throttle no problem

So I thought running the fuel tank dry caused to run dirt through the fuel system. And the filter and the pump were my first thoughts, but I wanted to make sure and ask you guys for advice.

 

Sounds like it could definitely be either, but what year jeep? If pre plastic tank (96 back) I would change the filter and give it a try since they are easy and probably needs done anyhow.

 

My truck did that an it was my injectors cloggen up so I'd say change filter an put alittle fuel injector cleaner in an see if that works

 

Well, a filter is maintenance anyway. Replace it.

Good chance you sucked crap into the fuel pump.

 

Since I'm on the app I'm guessing this problem is on your 1975 Miata right...specify what year and engine please first. Chance you burned the pump up since it relies on gas to cool it down. At the same time if it was the pump. Iirc you wouldn't be able to start the jeep. And like cruiser said. Dep on year, the filter is a wear item that needs replacing

 

In the meantime I've replaced the fuel filter, but that wasn't the solution. And a new fuel pump arrived. But before installing that, I would like to clean out the fuel system. Over the years water and dirt must have accumulated in it and I would like to start clean again. How do I do that?

 

You probably burned the solenoids out in the pump

 

That's why I am gonna replace the pump. But how to get all the crap out first?

 

I was having similar issues to yours on mine, and it turned out to be the little pickup strainer that was plugged up. On the '96 I think It's like a little sock inside the tank. I didn't know what I would find, so I bought a whole new fuel sender assembly. Since mine is a newer model, I had to drop the tank to remove the pump. I believe on the '96 you can remove the pump with the tank in place, but to thoroughly clean it, you'll have to drop the tank. I ended up taking my tank to a shop that repeatedly steamed the tank out and scrubbed it out. It was pretty nasty when I dropped it off, and very clean when I picked it up.

Did you just get a pump or the whole sender assembly?

 

Had a similar issue. Mine turned out to be my IAC or my tps. Not sure which Cuz I replaced them both

What did the gas that came out of your fuel filter look like? Was it so bad that you've decided to clean the "fuel system"?

I had the same problem kept it under 30 would run and made it home, next day ran it for 2 miles no problem and next day pump failed completely. I had to drop tank to get pump out and tank was clean inside. It was a 89. Your fuel filter should have kept line clear to engine and sox at pump clean to filter. Ken
