With that many miles you'd not be throwing money away by rebuilding the control arms. They are due.

I have an 03 cherokee and am replacing all control arm bushings Friday. Already did the upper passenger one Sat. I've done EVERYTHING you did to no avail. Makes me want to cry sometimes because I really like my jeep A LOT and HATE it wobbling all over when I hit certain bumps at certain speeds.

I got the lower control bushings from quadratec for VERY little ($7.99 each) and the uppers from Advance for ($20 for two).

Will keep you posted.

I know that the bearings need to be completely packed with grease and if dried out can cause a pretty serious issue.

Thanks for ya'll patience.

What you should do at this point instead of just throwing money at it is to have someone move the steering wheel back and forth while you watch everything. If the steering box needs adjustment, the steering shaft will turn a little before the pitman arm moves. Also, just watch the other components of the steering system, particularly track bar bushings. If you see things start to move and what they are attached to do not, then that is where you should start.

Awesome suggestions everyone!

It's freaking raining like it's the end of the world here today and gonna for the remainder of the week. Hopefully it'll clear up this weekend for me to get the Jeep up on the ramps and check everything out. Hopefully I'll know what I'm looking at and not end up trying to tighten the mufler bracket instead of the trackbar.

Mine does that when it hits a sharp chuck hole or the like, but now that the weather is finally shaping up its time to get out the sledge hammer cross my fingers and start swinging, and hopefully replace the front end, (ball joints etc) without to many problems,, Have never done a cherokee before, this may be verrrrry interesting.
`Spose I could be a little smarter than the average bear and get a manule, but what fun is that?, sheesh, I`ll spend more time reading than doing, not to mention I can`t comprehend squat anyways,,*HEH-HEH*.

Default Wobble

There is a think called the Death Wobble. When you drive over a pot hole or some uneven pavement your front end will shake violently. Is this your problem or a slight wobble or vibration?

If it is the death wobble, you need to fix or replace your steering stabilizer and steering linkage. I don't think you mentioned that you replaced those.

For your steering box, open the hood of the jeep and have someone move the steering wheel for you. If there is a lot of play in the steering wheel you may have to tighten it at the steering box. Look at your pitman arm to see how much wear is in it. If it is bad replace it.

The bearings are in the hub assembly. I replaced mine about a year ago prior to fixing my death wobble.

Good luck and let me know how it goes!

Default a pain

I just lifted my xj not long ago. It drove fine for about two months. Was on the interstate with a tractor trailor behind me and my jeep starts to shake uncontrollably. Intense to say the least. I had to come to a complete stop to make it stop shaking. I checked everything; tie rod ends, alignments, linkage, bushings and tires. Turned out to be the pitman arm. I had to get a drop pitman arm that dropped it about 3/4" and I haven't had a problem yet. good luck.

#1 most shops are staffed with hacks. Never trust what they say without independent verification. Worn wheel bearings and a worn steering box are likely causes of the type of wobble you describe.
As others have said get under there and have someone crank the steering wheel back and forth. I would jack up each front wheel first and shake the top of the tire in and out. Anything more than 1/16 inch of play and the wheel bearings should be replaced. Good hunting!
