Yet another specialty tool I don't own.
I am going to have to spend another $1000 on tools before the next project.
There are like another dozen tools I didn't even know existed as a result of this thread.
Think I paid like $3 for my nut splitter at hf... stop being a dumba$$Originally Posted by BimmerJeeper

Like I said this just isn't for you. With all the cash you supposedly make go by a Prius and use your xj as a down payment
...you are the weakest link, goodbye

Dan, nut splitter is already on my shopping list. I have about a dozen windows open with all the new tools I'll be needing to buy to do even the most basic jobs on this XJ. Tap&die, channel locks, dremel adapters, thread detective, angle grinder, sawzall, vice, MAPP torch, special cutting wheels, welder, etc. I just need to figure out where to store all this stuff. When I bought my XJ, I was stupid enough to believe the internet myth that you just need an entry level tool set from Sears to work on XJ's. LOL!

did any one suggest putting a deep well socket, swivel joint, extention, extension, extension ratchet on it from the top? and use channel locks, or vice grips to hold theshock boot? put the channel locks on the shock boot from the right side(hold it in your right hand) and let the force of you turning the ratchet kind of pin the channel locks against the shock tower.
maybe he needs specific instructions....like ikea stuff

He says the NUT (It's a nut, not a bolt...) is so stuck that the vice grip/channel locks will not hold the shock in place well enough to turn the nut. Personally, I think he needs to eat some more wheaties.Originally Posted by NCMetalMechanic

We have suggested everything to this guy. He just in over his head. I managed to replace all my control arms with adjustable ones , and replaced my upper axle bushings and tierod/ends with basic hand tools by myself this past weekend while laying on my garage floor . I don't see how someone can't figure out how to replace a shock his nut isn't even that rusty .Originally Posted by NCMetalMechanic

i said boot, not bolt. if the channel locks squeeze the metal shock boot(sleeve, what ever you wanna call it) it will keep it from spinning because its oval, not round. it'd be like crushing an oil filter to get it off if its too tight. turn the round surface into a flat surface, so you get better contact from the channel locks, plus, since its pinned, you dont have to hold it. If he has any hand strength he could clamp down on the old shock shaft and put a wrench on that thing and get it off but he probably has a desk job and has never put in a good day of manual labor with his hands so he has no hand strength. He probably ask his wife to open a jar or pickles hell he probably drinks twist cap beer cause he can't figure out how to use a bottle openerOriginally Posted by NCMetalMechanic

Could be why he's been mentioning lawyers and politician tools. All they're good for is pushing paper so that would make sense.Originally Posted by Tom95YJ

Nut splitter is by far the best suggestion so far. But, it you're a lawyer in the Big Apple, I guess it goes over your head.
