Remove it from the transfer case end and swing it down.

I was having the same issue until I bought the needle grease fitting. I never tried doing it by removing the driveshaft. But I would trust Cruisers word and do it the way he explained. Probably more efficient and easier than what I went through.

May not have one. Pull it out and check.

Though I have seen product listings for the socket yoke (ball and cup) that have fittings, it is probably more common to find them without. There is a strong rubber sleeve that seals around the ball to help form a weather-proof barrier. I don't have mine in front of me, but for situations like that you can sometimes use a hypodermic grease needle (not the standard needle shown in above in this thread, but a much smaller one that looks like a medical needle and is used for poking through grease boots with the smallest hole possible). They are useful for running the needle up under the edge of a boot and getting grease into the component. Because I don't have my cardan joint in front of me, I don't know if that rubber sleeve would be accessible enough to get the needle under, but that will be your option if you do not want to take the joint apart.

At some point though, it does simply make more sense to drop the shaft and simply service everything off the vehicle, replacing joints that need it. Because dropping the front shaft on an XJ is much easier than most people probably think. Getting the cardan apart and back together is sometimes perplexing the first time you do it, but also not terribly difficult (there are several youtube videos that help nail down the correct order to go in to help reduce the complexity).

You may or may not have a grease zerk fitting like the one Cruiser posted on the center ball.

If you dont have a zerk..there still is a way. But you still have to take the drive line out and one u-joint to get to the pin hole.

Like Jordan mentioned,,its a needle. and there might be a small hole on the center yoke. I say might cause Ive seen some without.

pics for reference.

Its called a (Grease injector needle).

But if you dont want to take u-joint out to find the hole..You can stick the needle under the rubber lip.

But if you luck out and find a grease fitting on the center yoke..it will take the needle like Cruiser posted.(Grease Needle)

If someone out there wants the center yoke that is GREASABLE and u-joints.
1310 series Front CV Driveshaft
DANA SPICER GREASABLE 211355X Centering Yoke
Spicer 5-153X GREASEABLE. U-joints
