Default Front Axles

I am looking at a 1998 Jeep Cherokee. It needs to have its front axles replaced (maybe its the U joints). I am not a mechanic (yet), it is how it was explained to me. The 4wd makes a clicking noise when engaged. How bad is this or how expensive would it be to have them replaced?

could be u-joints could be unibearing could be ball joints. they are not hard to do but for a first time job it can be a little intimidating for some just take your time and have plenty of time to do it don't rush. and buy quality parts so you don't have to do it again in a year

If it has the CV equipped axle shafts and they're clicking on turns when in 4WD, then the offending axle shaft must be replaced. JMO

none of the above issues are very hard to fix get a good quality repair manual and basic hand tools you will be fine the only specialty tool you might need is the big socket for the axle nut cant recall the exact size off the top of my head

Thanks, I was worried it might be a big job and I shouldn't buy the Jeep. The vehicle seems clean but the car fax say it was it two accidents. Maybe that's why it is pretty cheap.

If I was you I would take it to a shop and ask them to look over the under body and such to check for unibody damage from the accidents. Shops will usually do it for under $100 if you explain your situation.

There is a write-up in the tech section here for changing u-joints... it has a tool list and purty pictures even.....

I wouldnt put a ton of confidence in anything CarFax says... I have a truck that I was going to sell and the buyer says..'CarFax said it had an accident..you lied to me".. The problem is.. that when the supposed accident occured.. I owned the truck and it was being driven daily, and wasn't involved in any accident.
