I'm looking for a front axle for my 96 XJ, but are the axles of different years fit? Will a 2 dr 4x4 fit on my 4 dr 4x4? Gear ratios too how can you tell which ones to get? My is mostly a DD. Any recommendations.

Xj axles are basically interchangeable. You don't want an early one with a vacuum disco or a late one with the low pinion though. As for gear ratios auto pretty much all had 3.55 4cyl ad 4.10 and 5spd 4.0 usually had 3.07 I believe. There is an is tag on the axle. I don't know the numbers specifically but it will tell you what you have. I'm sure there's a list of the numbers somewhere.

If the axle is out of a Cherokee with a 4.0 litre, and has an auto tranny the axle gears are 3.55. If motor is a 4.0 litre and has a manual tranny, it has 3.07 gears. If the cherokee has a 2.5 4-banger, it has 4.10 gears.

No. They are spring under and the front is for leafs.
