So I was tearing apart my front axle to find out why it was making a clunk noise, come to find out the pinion bearing went out and I have parts of it all in the differential. Both my ring and pinion have teeth that are messed up. So my question is what all do I need to replace? And why does it seem that the factory gearing( tag said 3.55) seem so expensive while 3.73 and all that is like half the price. I know I need a bearing kit due to all the other bearing, ones on the carrier seem to be gummed up and are not smooth.
This is all that I was looking at right now
Get it from somewhere other than Randy's and you can get if for much cheaper, you can get a USA standard gear set and rebuild kit for $250 if you shop around. Amazon usually has them.
Okay and would the junkyard one be best option , I have a second jeep that I could possibly pull the axle from it
Even better, free-fiddy can't be beat, lol...just make sure they're the same ratio, and both are identical, there's low pinion and high pinion options for the D30. If you're looking at the reverse cut gears, that means high pinion. Verify both are the same pinion setup and ratio, and you're good to go.
Because changing the ring and pinion, and bearings is precision work that require special tools you are not likely to have, so you will have to spend money on those too. And then getting the right wear pattern and all the other measurements right is crazy tough if you haven't done it before.
