Fram Oil Filter Info FWIW
I bought a 1998 w/ 4.0 in April. Last oil change by PO was in late Feb. He wasn't driving much so I won't be changing oil for another 500 mi.
The shop he used put on a Fram extra guard. Finally bothered me enough that I went out and bought a Mopar filter and changed it out this AM (I was worried about dry starts).
Well the fram filter was full with oil and had not drained out. I won't use Fram but the idea that they will cause dry starts due to poor anti drain back valve (no valve?) seems to be over blown.

Yeah it's bro, bro?
Funny how I'm spending hours here and on BITOG worrying about the nuances of oil and filters while my real DD is getting neglected by comparison, but I'm lovin' this Jeep (98 Classic w/ 122K). Having fun fixing it up and runs great.
Those Fram Extra Guards do seem like POS' though.

It isn't that they all leak down, it's that the quality control & parts used are so marginal you never know if the one you buy will or won't.
I never believed there was a problem until I changed the oil and used the Fram. I got a slight knock on startup after sitting overnight. Replaced with Wix and the noise went away. I had used them for years prior to that on all sorts of vehicles without an issue.
I figure I'm paying about the same either way, may as well just get a different brand and not worry about it.

It's only because it was an ExtraGuard that it held oil in.
I will not support a company like Fram or use any of their products after they produced so many inferior oil filters, and still do, before they came out with ExtraGuard. The problem is not overblown by any means.

I put a fram on my jeep last year for the first time. Fired it up after an oil change and the oil pressure gauge pegged. Changed the sending unit to see if it coincidently failed, no change.
Put a wix filter on it, problem solved.

I've ran fram several times without any problems. it was the extra guard so i dont know if that makes a difference, the main reason i picked them is because im to cheap to buy a oil filter wrench

I'm your average grease monkey at a local Honda dealership (obviously not Jeep or I wouldn't have so many questions) and I HATE Fram filters. They're all junk in my personal opinion. I may put some aftermarket parts on my vehicles but, I'm a firm believer in OEM filters.

I would not put a Fram Extra Guard on a demo car.
To be fair, I think the other Fram filters (Tough Guard and up) are built quite a bit better, but still mediocre.
But because Fram continues to make the piece of crap Extra Guard, I won't support them (and I worked for Honeywell, the parent company of Fram....for 23 years).
I use Purolator Pure One. Great filtration, good reviews, decent price on amazon.

The extra guard is the cheapo Fram, maybe I'll autopsy it tomorrow if I have time.
I ran the Mopar filter for about 75 mi today. Pressure seems about the same, maybe just slightly less at cruising speed but still between 40-50 psi.
Really don't know who makes it or how efficient it is at filtering but I feel better.
