iirc the dana 44s were included with some of the xjs with tow packages which came with 373s, check the numbers on the ring gear thatll tell you.
and yes if you dont know how to do a ring and pinion yourself or dont have the coin to have it done id get the front axle too and sell your old ones.

if you do have the money to have them done then it sounds like time to regear
Did you even read this thread? I was stating that if he was going to remove the matching gears out of the JY Dana 30 that he should get the carrier because the break is between 3.55 and 3.73. If he is going to be setting up the ring and pinion he will be setting the back lash also, and you can change carriers between axles, you just have to set the diff up for it.

when i picked up my D44 it came with 4.10 gears and a detoit locker, but the tab on the cover said 3.55 on it. it is a lot easier and safer to swap an axle with minor tools then it is to change the gears out with no knowledge on the subject.i pulled a D30 HP out of a 4 banger cherokee and it had 4.10's in it, so i ran those for a while till i upgraded to 4.56 gears. 4.10's were awesome on my 31's

^x2 Much easier to just swap front Dana 30 with the Dana 44. Plus, after you sell your D30 the cost should be about the same or maybe even less. I replaced the rear axle on a Scout once because I backed into a rock and put a hole in the diff. cover and ran it out of lube. ( OK this was when I started wheeling and I didn't check after the rock hit. ) The rear I found for a replacement had 4.56 gears, my old gears were 3 somethings ( sorry, it was a long time ago and I can not remember exactly ) anyway I traded the JY front axles and gave them 25.00 more for the matching front 44. IMO it is the way to go.

Well it only took me a couple of years, but the 44 should be going in this weekend! I'm getting 4.56 gears being put in at a shop this week along with chromoly axle shafts in the front axle (Dana 30 hp) and a spartan locker. Keeping the factory limited slip in the 44 to save some money and I figured it would be better in winter to have a limited slip than a spartan. I got Thick gears to work with that carrier. And I scored some Super Swamper TSL 34s off my buddies dad for $200! They have like 95% tread left
Ok now for my question, I just put new brake springs and hardware in my 35, I know the brake shoes are bigger in the 44 so I'm getting new ones, but will i be able to use the springs from my 35 in my 44?

are you talking the brake springs or leaf springs?

leaf springs, yes. brake springs, no. you will need a new spring kit for the 44 as the springs should be longer.

Brake springs. I thought I had read somewhere that the non c clip brakes were the same as the 44, but the 44 has 2.5 inch wide pads

Yeah I was waiting for that. But after spending over 3000 on the axle, gears, locker, chromoly shafts and new bearings in everything and getting the gears put in, F it, I'll see what it'll cost tomorrow
