found a 99 cherokee need some helpful tips on it
hello everyone so iv been looking around still for a jeep and ran into this
http://chicago.craigslist.org/nch/cto/1923112119.html
please take a look as you see the guy said that the coolant system went out im wondering how much would it cost to fix it ? as even if i were to buy it id give the guy like 800 bucks for it but that still debatable until i see the condition of it
anyway let me know what you guys think, i mean it doesnt have to many miles but only thing im worrying about is the cooling system is that going to be a pain to fix ?

My first thought was this thing has overheated. That is usualy what someone means when they say the cooling system has gone out. This engine could be shot.

I'd be wary, some of the later '99s had the weaker head casting that would crack at the first sign of overheating.
If it was driven until it stopped running, then the motor is toast. If he shut it off as soon as he noticed the temperature gauge climbing, then it might be salvageable. Some motors can be overheated and be fine, but if you run them for any distance the oil will break down and then you end up with a seized motor. Or something, like the head, will crack. Or a valve could get burned and drop compression on 1 or more cylinders so that it doesn't run right at all. Or the head gasket will blow...
Like I said, if he shut it right off when it started to overheat, it could be fine. But that's taking his word for it, a lot of people are dumb as stumps and will keep driving until the engine stops.
Heck, a lot of times even after they 'seize' and stop running from overheating, once they cool down they'll start back up (since the metal has contracted), but the damage will be done already.

other than that, it would be a steal on a 99. for 1000 bucks, id offer 800. he obviously isnt lookin to make much on it. either that or the motor is toast and he knows it is why he is trying to sell it so cheap. good call.. keep lookin

Yeah, true. If the rest of it is solid, your looking at $400-600 for a good used motor and a couple 12-packs with some buddies to put it in. I think $800 is a bit high, though, especially since the guy says it's rough.
