Default First things First

I'm on the prowl for a second generation XJ. When I get one, what are the first things I should do? I'm talking just the basics, so are there simple and important mods? Would you do the full tune up (plugs, all filters, all fluids, etc.)? I'm really looking for a shopping list of things to do to ensure any possible deamons from previous ownership are minimized as much as possible.

Thanks,
s

#1 should be to call your local dealership with the VIN Number and check for open recall notices, and ask for a build sheet.
Complete fluid change and a full tune up.
Pull the NSS and cleand the bejeesus outta it.
Inspect the brake system and adjust the E-Brake.
Add a few drops of light oil to the door hinges.
Pull up the carpet and check for rust.

Default Couple Clarification Questions

So, although I'm not a complete novice,, I do have my limitations. I apologize for having to seek clarification, but I only comprehend short sentences (if you know what I mean). That being said:

1. What is a "build Sheet"
2. Can you list or link a comprehensive guide to all steps in a "full tune up" (I'm sure I can do the work, but I don't know what all is involved)
3. Can you also list out what all of the fluid systems are (I can think of brakes, oil, coolant, transmission, power steering, differential)
4. What is the "NSS" (I didn't see it in the Acronym thread)
5. I'm planning to pull the carpet and regardless of the rust situation, roll on a bed liner. This may be a dumb question, but wouldn't it be better to add some protection underneath where it gets the salt and water (is this limited by accessibility or just a stupid idea?)
6. When I'm done with all you suggest, I'm thinking about adding headlight fluid and exhaust bearings (I know this stuff is often overlooked, but I want my rig to run forever!)

Thanks again,
s

1. What is a "build Sheet" It's a list of what went into your XJ when it was built.
2. Can you list or link a comprehensive guide to all steps in a "full tune up" (I'm sure I can do the work, but I don't know what all is involved) Plugs, plug wires, cap, rotor, air filter, thorough cleaning of the throttlebody, and a can of Seafoam added to the gastank. You might want to add 1/2 a can to the intake while the motor is running. Slowly add it via the vacuum line that's connected to the master cylinder.
3. Can you also list out what all of the fluid systems are (I can think of brakes, oil, coolant, transmission, power steering, differential)transfercase too.
4. What is the "NSS" (I didn't see it in the Acronym thread) Neutral Safety Switch. This switch prevents the rig from starting unless it's in Park or neutral. It also turns on your reverse lights and the signal for the range selcector goes through it as well. It's mounted on the passenger side of the transmission.
5. I'm planning to pull the carpet and regardless of the rust situation, roll on a bed liner. This may be a dumb question, but wouldn't it be better to add some protection underneath where it gets the salt and water (is this limited by accessibility or just a stupid idea?) Personal preference really. Kinda depends on where you live and the winter conditions.
6. When I'm done with all you suggest, I'm thinking about adding headlight fluid and exhaust bearings (I know this stuff is often overlooked, but I want my rig to run forever!) Chrome wingnuts add horsepower and increase torque.

Thanks again,
s
