Based on the examples he has given, I would say yes, Valvoline probably falls into the same category given that they are owned by Ashland. I believe Ashland has a refinery, I know they have gas stations like Shell.

Another nugget of Valvoline Oil info, the NextGen Oil they sell now is 50% post consumer oil. Kinda cool in certain respects.

Although they may have certain oils that are in the same category as Schaeffer & Ames.

Yeah if you research Fram more, you won't find many good things when it comes to our jeeps. Read through this as well

Also, click on "Overview" and read that too

I've only seen k&n filters at autozone... never seen Mobil 1 there. I can go to Napa or others they're just a lil outta the way.

I have to say this thread has made me think twice.

Thanks for the suggestions everyone! i really appreciate all of the links and discussion.

I took my $50 walmart gift card and went down and bought 7 quarts of Pennzoil platinum 10w-30 for $40. If there's anything seriously wrong with tis, let me know. I'm not doing anything till saturday. Tomorrow I'm going to go pick up a filter from Oreillys or autozone.

I have my own preference based on my own research for oil, but based on what everybody else's personal preference the 4.0L - that's in good condition in the first place - seems to do just fine as long as you don't use complete garbage and change it regularly. Leaving crap in for a long time won't benefit anyone. Likewise if the engine is problematic you may need to look into some of the little recipes some people have. Hell, I read someone joking that the 4.0L could probably run on WD-40 in a pinch... sadly it made me think :P

Other than that, +1 on the good filter. That Mini Mopar link someone posted with the reviews and cross-sections is an excellent resource.

K&N makes good filters, they're just pricier than others because of the name.
I run Mobil 1, which I got at my local autozone. And I'm happy with it. Wix and Napa Gold are also highly recommended.
I'd stick with the K&N if I were you. Plus it's nice and convenient with the nut on the end of it
