No you don't need a tool for what your doing for now just taking thing off what could be

And no the connection should look like this

no special tool required just take an push in the two clear tabs and pull back on the hose but be careful it's going to have some pressure and if it does it's good sign take off the hose farthest back that one is your feed the other one is return

 

I think your 98 may only have one line coming in if so that the one you need to take off
