24V winch

I searched and couldn't find anything. I have a friend who wants to give me a 24V 8K winch from a Hum-V, and I'm wondering what I'd need to do to make it work.. Do I need to change the solenoids on the winch? The motor(s)? I don't want to run 2 batteries, so please don't recommend that.. If I was going to spend the money to do that, I'd just buy a 12V winch. Thanks in advance..

All I can think of is a 12v to 24v power inverter. I can't find any manufacturers that make them though. This might help. I'm not an electrician, it's like a different language to me.

Save yourself a headache and find a 12v winch. Being that the 24v winch is a mil-spec item, you risk the chance of having difficulty finding civilian accessories, like winch plates, that would work with it anyway.

Thanks a lot guys for the help. My buddy is a Marine and got a bunch of stuff off of several Hum-v's that were going to scrap, so he thought he'd give me the winch. I'll go ahead and pass on it. I may take it anyway, with the hopes of trading for a 12v if someone needed a 24v, but I'm sure it'll just collect dust in my garage. Thanks again!

DC motors can be used with a rheostat to change the speed as far as I know, therefore I don't see why it wouldn't operate fine on 12 volts just cut your specs in half.
Maybe an engineer can correct me but I do have a background in electronics 40 years ago.

Yes, free winch for the price of a second battery my math says second battery is cheaper.
Um you loose a lot of torque and it takes more amps to run. higher the volts less amps needed to run.
I may not be a certified electrician but I wire anything from 6 volt to 480 as it's in my job duties

Well, I don't know if winch speed is selectable or not, but yes you will lose torque at a lower voltage, and it will draw more amperage. I said you'd have to cut your specs in half. Maybe it's a bad idea, but I imagine if winch speed is selectable, at some time you will be running with 12 volts.
After all the OP said he didn't want to use two batteries yet that seems to be the only option he is being given. Experiment, it's free.

sorry, I get those confused.
the trick would be to isolate the second battery from the first, so you don't fry the electronics....and then allow it to put out only 12v to the electrical system WHILE putting 24v to the winch...

The PITA factor is not worth it. Just get a 12V winch. You need to be able to charge those batteries while you are making a long pull. If you get that second battery and isolate it you will not be able to do this. In the end, you will wish you just bought the 12V winch instead.
