Default Few questions - 00 xj trans and trans case fluid - 231.

What type trans fluid and trans case fluid do i use? Seeing diff opinions. 231 case. Lifted w 33’s. Guy at store said atf +4 synthetic. Seeing dex 3 in other places. Already put in new trans filter w atf +4. Havent done the case yet.

4.5 lift w 33 12.5 tires. Rubbing on turns big time. Dont want to trim the metal if dont have to? Other ideas?

Dexron III/Mercon in both the transmission and transfer case is the proper fluid.

Yes use the Mercon. I would drain it. Just cause you have a drain plug in the tranny pan. With the transfer case prettty sure it is a 10mm hex head. Remove the fill plug first. I never had a problem but some people have stated that they can't get them out. You remove the drain one first, then can't get the fill one out you are kinda of in a pickle. 4 to 5 qts will come out of the tranny. You will not get all the tranny fluid out doing this. If the fluid looks OK just refill to the proper level and call it a day. If it looks not so good you do it a couple times to kind of flush it out. About 1 to 1 1/2 qts will come out of the transfer case. Filling a transfer case is always fun. I used to take a gear oil cap, it will fit on a qt bottle, and squeeze it in to the transfer case. Then I spent the $6 and bought one of these. Will fit on a qt bottle.

Just cause it is so easy I dump my transfer case and tranny fluid every other year.

Yeah I'd dump that ATF 4 out of there. It'll be mixed with what's in there already but oh well. Something that's rated as DexIII will do just fine. I use the gallon jugs of Valvoline Dex/Merc from Wal Mart.

T-case is the same just some DexIII. Pretty much any Dex/Merc labeled bottle will work just double check the label that it meets Dex III specs.

Default Which TF use I use?

Need some advice on correct type transmission fluid.
I have 99 XJ Sport 4L with AW4 231 transmission. At 184k I did poor man flush and was getting ready to do second flush and decided to check for proper type fluid. I have seen nor felt any issues since doing the flush. I have read several threads on JF and now I think the people at Autozone may have advised incorrectly. They recommended I use Castrol High Mileage which according to label says it's AF3+. They looked it up on their system and said that was compatible and what I should use so I did.

My questions and need for your advice is: Should I do another PMF and replace with DexIII with Merc? Should I do PMF and keep the Castrol AFT+3? Here are pics of the Castrol, a Dex/Merc and Valoline bottle (I used the Valoline to change the transfer case fluid recently.

I appreciate any advice.
