Check for spark by removing a plug, keeping it attached to the plug wire, placing the plug electrode near a good engine ground and having a buddy crank the engine while you watch. You are looking for a strong, blue, snapping spark. Yellow/orange/white indicates a weak spark, which may not be strong enough to start the engine.

If spark checks out (and only IF), then try spraying a small amount of starting fluid or a small splash of gas into the intake. If the engine starts and runs momentarily, you have identified a "fuel delivery" problem.

The above tests are both easy to perform and will help you isolate this. You need to find out what you're missing. Spark or fuel.

86 should be 2.8 V6...? don't think there's a crank sensor on the V6.

yeah, but there's not sea between here and there... unless he has an imported jeep.

not sure man, can't help ya with this one.

check for spark, fuel and air. maybe pour a bit of gas in the carb/throttle body.
pull the dist. cap and see if the rotor turns when you crank it...

The OP shot and burned his jeep.

I guess we'll never know what it was.
